Ghana sends 'Grandma' to Big Brother Africa

The Big Brother Africa reality show is undoubtedly the most watched reality show on the African continent – catching the attention of millions outside the continent too.

Ghana has been a strong representative of the reality show since its first edition which was premiered to million audience in 42 African countries on Sunday May 25, 2003, and ended on September 7 of the same year - lasting 106 days.

Since then, the show has seen; Big Brother Africa 2, Big Brother 3, Big Brother Revolution, and Big Brother All Stars.

Personalities such as Samuel Bampoe (Sammy B), Kwaku Tutu (Kwaku-T), Wilhelmina Andani (Mimi), George Wayoe (Ray Wayo) and Sammy B (making a second appearance), have represented Ghana during these seasons. None has been able to annex the ultimate prize for Ghana.

This year, the Big Brother Africa reality show takes an Amplified turn and as usual Ghana is going to make an appearance at the show.

'Grandma'

Confidence Haugen, CEO of MultiMedia Company and owner of Aphrodisiac Night Club is Ghana's representative for this season's show, and is among 14 Housemates who will vie for the ultimate prize of USD200,000.

At age 37, Confidence becomes the oldest in this season's show closely followed by Herminio, a 32 year-old Rapper and Radio Host from Maputo, Mozambique.

Other Housemates for this season's Big Brother Amplified include: Bhoke, 26, TV Broadcaster from Dar es Salaam, Tanzania; Hanni, 22, Singer and Student from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia; Jossy, 28, Recording Artist, Sales and Ad Manager from Namibia; Lomwe, 27, Radio and Club DJ from Blantyre, Malawi; Luclay, 28, Actor/Acting Coach from Cape Town, South Africa; and Millicent, 28, Actress from Nairobi, Kenya.

The rest are; Mumba, 24, Radio DJ from Lusaka, Zambia; Sharon O, 25, Artist/Musician from Kampala, Uganda; Vimbai, 24, Model from Harare, Zimbabwe; Vina, 26, Radio Presenter from Lagos, Nigeria; Weza, 26, TV Presenter and Model from Luanda, Angola; and Zeus, 24, Entrepreneur, Artist and Marketer from Gaborone, Botswana.

Considering the ages of the housemates and judging by past experiences, Confidence could only count on her flamboyant and 'naughty' lifestyle to exempt herself from an early exit from the house.

Sammy B who represented Ghana in the last edition of the show, Big Brother All Stars, was the second Housemate to be evicted from the house mainly because of his age, 35. Many said the age deprived him of his youthfulness and was not able to cope with the other contestants – he was too distant from the show.

If age becomes a factor again, then Confidence has no chance in the house, but pundits are already engaging the "wait and see" gear, because the Big Brother reality can cough up surprises.

This season's show starts Sunday, May 1, and for 91 days, the 14 housemates will battle it out to be the ultimate winner.
