What women love about men's style

There are certain qualities in men that women absolutely love, one of such quality is having good dress sense. Women typically prefer a man who looks as if he just stepped out of GQ magazine, the often overlooked neat and conservative fellow. However, these neat and conservative dressers are often over-shadowed by the millions of men who commit fashion crimes on a daily basis. Wrong socks with dress suits, ill-fitted suits, and mis-matched or over-coordinated apparel are just a few of the fashion mistakes men make.

In the midst of all these fashion mishaps, some men have, over time, built a sense of fashion that is commendable and loved by women and even men too.

We bring you 10 Nigerian men who are doing well in their fields and are also ruling the fashion world with their dress sense. One thing these men have in common is that they love fashion and have good sense of dressing.

Women blessed with such companions are bound to flaunt their mates to colleagues, relatives and even neighbours. Women have this need to look their best. And, they can't look their best without an equally good-looking and dashing mate by their side.

Streaks of colour in hairstyles

Credit: photogallery.indiatimes.com
Towards the latter part of 2010 hair colour highlights gradually gained grounds in our hair salons. It's now a street style trend and we'll be seeing more of it this year. Some are a delight to see while others are just plain weird. I wonder how one person can carry  six streaks of colour on one head - yellow, blue, orange, red, purple green  - and dress appropriately for any occasion. I'm not joking. I've come across a few people with this incredible clownish look.

The best combination I've seen  are two to three colour highlights. Mid to lighter tones of purple, blue and red on rich black hair plus a neutral blonde shade or any of the brown shades can easily be accommodated when you dress. The best way to go about selecting colour highlights for your hair is to take into account your  natural skin, hair, and eye colour and also the colours of the clothes you wear on daily basis. It will not be  practical to choose your hair colour based on only a specific attire to be worn on one occasion.

Fashion & Lifestyle: Urban Fashion Influences In Ghana, The Past & Today!

As hip-hop music gained recognition among the Ghanaian youth so did urban or hip-hop fashion in the early 90′s. Reebok, Karl Kani, Timberland, Kangol, Tommy Hilfiger were some of the foreign brands that were in vogue.
Subsequently, along the way we developed our own hip-hop brand calling it hip life. In response to this trend, our young talented designers rose to the occasion and created urban clothing and accessory brands influenced by the hip-hop culture for the youthful Ghanaian consumer.
A Move From Foreign To Local Brands
The same desire to express oneself using our culture that created hip life paved the way for the young consumer to accept local urban fashion brands.
I can readily recall brands such as PKOG, Cediwear, DOM21, Agasn with Mkogh leading the pack. TV presenters and artistes were seen sporting these brands. Mkogh became a household name with the help of TV series like Suncity.
Demand For Custom Made Urban Clothing
Urban clothing is mainly made up of t-shirts of all types such as lacoste, round necks, hood t-shirts and tank tops. Accessories accompanying these clothes were handbags, wallets, baseball caps and purses.
Then arose the high demand for urban fashion that revealed the wearer’s identity. Pet names were printed or sewn onto t-shirts or on drawstring and mono strap handbags made from fabric and PVC.
This demand was largely met by young talented students who custom made t-shirts and accessories and sold them to their colleagues.
DOM 21 and Agasn are two brands that offered customized urban fashion to students in Accra Academy, St. Mary’s, Achimota and St. Peter’s senior high schools.
Ghana‘s 50th Independence Anniversary
In 2007, Blazing Gear was one of the prominent brands that spearheaded a sense of nationalism among the Ghanaian populace by offering all kinds of tees with images of Kwame Nkrumah, the Ghana flag, the black star and Independence Arch to name a few.

The national colours of red, yellow and green made a strong showing on the fashion landscape.
African Cup Of Nations 2008
The sense o of nationalism spilled over from 2007 to 2008 as Ghana hosted the African cup of nation’s football tournament. It offered the opportunity for vendors to sell left over merchandise from the previous year and get some more to sell.
Today’s Urban Fashion
Initially sportswear created the clothing and accessories for the urban style worldwide but now it’s becoming less sporty and more sophisticated.
In Ghana there’s this trend that’s catching up on our campuses. T-shirts with more feminine cuts and elaborate wax print decoration worn over a pair of slim cut jeans.
Some brands worthy of mention include Renee Q and Obya Couture. For men, tailored dress shirts worn with casual pair of jeans trousers.
Now hip-hop stars are adopting silk suits for their performances and it has started rubbing off on some of our artistes here. The future of urban style is a move from casual sports wear to selecting trendier designer pieces and mixing them with casual ones.

Up Close with Ghanaian International Model Yawa Tsagli

Model. Svengali. Ultraprenuer: that’s how it reads on her business card. Yawa Tsagli is a determined soul aiming to blend the allure of Alek, the star power of Naomi and the acumen of Tyra. Showing an early interest in fashion and modeling when her looks were praised one too often, she has decidedly followed her passion with gusto and panache.
The modelling scene in Ghana, like most places, is fierce-with a multitude of girls fighting for the limited amount of jobs however, Yawa understands these realities and saw an opportunity to use branding, out-of-the-box thinking and careful image management to set her apart from the fashionistic herd. ‘Talent, like beauty, is so over-rated’ she quips. ‘One has to be professional and focused if you want to be successful’ she continued.
Coupled with her adage ‘1% inspiration, 99% perspiration’, Yawa’s networking with top rated photographers, designers and brand consultants, has culminated in admiration and a blossoming career on the local front which has seen her on catwalks, calendars and commercials and an invitation to speak at an upcoming World Entrepreneurship Day event this April at the British Council. Things seem to be looking up for the spritely beauty. ‘Mind you, it’s not every door of opportunity you walk into’ Yawa said thoughtfully. ‘There are many pitfalls one has to avoid. For me, as a cub in this industry, I need to be mature, discerning and circumspect in my decisions, so I don’t get my dreams short-circuited.’
So what’s her masterplan? ‘That’s an easy one’ she says. ‘To ultimately create my own fashion label amongst a range of other business interests, hit the runways of South Africa, Europe and The States and appreciate life for all the good things God has done for me.’ Deep thoughts for one so young but Yawa assuringly states that she has quite a few mentors in her life, especially, her father, who continually mould her.
In the meantime, Yawa continually seeks opportunities to set herself apart. ‘I realised going for auditions and waiting for agencies or companies to come for me was going to be leaving too much to chance so I decided to build a better mousetrap, so to speak, so they could come to me instead.’
‘Yawa loves her career and naturally looks to the high-ranking supermodels for inspiration but she admires successful Ghanaian models like Belinda Baidoo and Kate Tachie Menson who have proven that with the right attitude, hard work and heaps of good fortune, anyone can make it in this business.’
So what’s next for Ms. Tsagli? ‘I won’t be a svengali if I let it all out, now, would I? she enigmatically noted. To get get in touch with  this Young professional aspiring model, you can get hold of her on Facebook and via her website below:

Rocky Dawuni urges fashion designers to promote national colours

Ghanaian fashion designers have been advised to promote Ghana’s national colours to whip up the interest of Ghanaians in their use.
Concerns have been raised about the low patronage and exhibition of paraphernalia made in the Ghana national colours; Red, Gold, Green and Black.
In 2007 Ghanaians were fanatical about wearing cloths and paraphernalia made of the Ghanaian national colours as part of the Ghana@50 celebrations.
Artists who created various paraphernalia made of Ghana national colours generated lots of revenue as people, both old and young, patronized the products in commemoration of the celebrations.
It is surprising to note that few Ghanaians were seen adorned with cloths made of the national colours on the 54th Independence Day anniversary celebration on 6th March 2011.
Some attributed the low patronage and exhibition of the Red, Gold, Green and Black that symbolize the allegiance Ghanaians owe to the nation, to the gradual demise of patriotism among Ghanaians.
But Ghana’s international music star, Rocky Dawuni has told Adom News that, though some Ghanaians have lost interest in the use of national colours for reasons best known to them, fashion designers can turn the table around.
He says Ghanaians will love to wear cloths designed in national colours if they are attractively crafted.
He has therefore urged fashion designers to employ creative means to entice Ghanaians to patronize cloths made in Ghana national colours.
Rocky Dawuni believes this will help promote the national colours both home and abroad.
The music icon who always hoisted the Ghana flag as a back drop on the various platforms he has performed, told Adom News “there have been several instances where audiences who patronized my international shows, approached me to find out my nationality and the meaning of the Ghana National colours, which I explained to them.”

Ghanaian Rhian Benson and her global soul sound

Ghanaian singer Rhian Benson is not your typical music superstar.

A graduate of the London School of Economics, she spent a stint working on the trading floor of an investment bank in London and was pursuing graduate studies at Harvard Business School before turning to music as a career.

It was while she was at Harvard that her mother was diagnosed with cancer and Benson decided to relocate to London to care for her -- a move that ended her studies but inadvertently kick-started her musical career.

Up until then, she had only pursued "music as a hobby," says Benson, who today is one of Ghana's hottest musical exports. Songwriting was just something she did on the side, for her own pleasure, she says.

But it was while she was looking after her mother that Benson's musical talent and passion for singing began to flourish.

"I found myself doing a lot more writing," she says. "All of a sudden, more than ever, I wanted to put these words to music," she says.

The elegant singer started performing regularly in small venues across London, before being discovered by DKG Music, a U.S.-based record label that released her first album.

That 2003 debut album, "Gold Coast," paid tribute to the country in which she was born and raised and won over critics and fans worldwide.

"Gold Coast was Ghana's old name pre-independence," Benson says. "I just wanted to pay respect to my Ghanaian family and the musicians there who influenced me so much and the wonderful, rich culture experiences I had as a child growing up."

Born in Accra to a Ghanaian father and a Welsh mother, Benson grew up surrounded by music. Her mother was a gifted singer and her father an accomplished guitar player.

She began playing the piano at a young age and wrote her first song at the age of 9.

"I can remember as a kid rushing home from school, literally having lunch and speeding to do my homework, just to have the rest of the afternoon to go through my dad's album collections, to sing along and create harmonies," she says.

Benson's unique mixture of soul and jazz in "Gold Coast" proved a success, and now with a new album under her belt, the talented singer is aiming to capture audiences' imaginations once again with her dusky voice and soulful sound.

In "Hands Clean," released last month, Benson daringly fuses traditional jazz and soul with a modern electronic undertone. She says the sound is an evolution of her previous work, which had more of a percussive and organic feel to it.

"The new album, 'Hands Clean,' being electronic, deliberately does not include that but it's still very rhythmic -- that's a very big part of African music," Benson says.

Heavily influenced by the sounds of Africa, Benson is part of a growing generation of talented musicians from the continent who are determined to overcome any difficulties in order to communicate their art.

"A lot of African artists, they are very much making things happen for themselves, which I really respect," she says.

Already an acclaimed and popular performer, Benson urges younger African to adopt a positive attitude to fulfill their dreams.

"You know what, just follow your dream. It's an exciting time for young Ghanaians. They have access to things that their parents and generations never did," she says.

  • "They have access to internet and the same information like kids in Stockholm have. It's great. The future is great."

Big Brother Africa 'Amplified'

M-Net has revealed the eye and name of it’s yet to be launched season of its popular Big Brother reality show.

The new season of the 91-day reality show which will be launched on May 1 will be called Big Brother Amplified, a statement released by Multichoice Friday.

Running 91 days and 24/7 non-stop with a dream grand prize of USD200 000, the sixth season of Africa’s biggest reality show, according to organizers, will include more drama, emotions, excitement and suspense.

Biola Alabi, M-Net Africa Managing Director who heads up the channel’s initiatives across the continent said the new name fits perfectly with the magnitude of the reality show.

“By definition amplified means to increase the volume, to make louder, to make more powerful and that’s exactly what we want to do with season six. To take the elements that audiences find so fantastic and present them in a refreshing new way while adding big surprises and entertaining twists.” She explained.

Biola further added, “Amplified is such a well-known pop culture term and Big Brother has definitely become a pop culture success. So the name fits perfectly.”

The dramatic new eye is etched in a carbon fibre background with an edgy, futuristic feeling and it has a sophisticated polished reflective finish. The newly unveiled show logo sets the scene for a bold new season, organizers have said.

With the deadline for entries now closed and the next phase of selection now well underway to choose housemates from the 14 participating countries (Angola, Botswana, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe), Big Brother Amplified is on track to launch in little over a month!

“We received an unprecedented amount of entries this year,” said Alabi who added “It’s been truly phenomenal, with almost 7,000 written entries received from across the continent and countless more people attending the ‘last chance’ open auditions.

“We’ve had people from all walks of life from very different backgrounds with completely different aspirations …all take this one opportunity to enter Big Brother. It’s really heartening to see that if anything, the show is going from strength to strength,” Biola revealed.

Created and produced for M-Net by Endemol South Africa, the Big Brother Amplified series will once again be hosted by charismatic Nigerian, IK Osakioduwa, who has been at the heart of the action since he joined the show two seasons ago.

With a brand new house also under construction, it’s a matter of weeks before Big Brother Amplified will be launched.

Rihanna Breaks Billboard Chart Records With ‘S&M’

Rihanna’s ‘S&M’ will hit No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 today (April 21), marking the Barbados-born singer’s 10th No. 1 single.

With the Britney Spears-aided ‘S&M (Remix)’ giving her fourth single off the ‘Loud’ album a bit more push, Rihanna will attain the honor of scoring 10 No. 1′s on Billboard’s Hot 100 in the shortest span of time. She recorded her first No. 1, ‘SOS,’ just four years, 11 months and two weeks ago. The singer also beat out labelmate Mariah Carey by almost five months.

Not only did Rihanna beat Mariah to the chart record in a shorter period of time, but at 23, she’s also the youngest artist to notch 10 No. 1′s in the chart’s 52-year history, besting Mariah again, who was 25 when she scored her 10th single.

“10th!!!!!Now LOOK at what u did … THANK U so much, this is the BEST news!” Rihanna tweeted. “BIGUP to @britneyspears and all her wonderful fans who supported this song.”

The red-haired phenom is the ninth artist to achieve 10 No. 1 singles, and the fifth solo female, following Janet Jackson, Whitney Houston, Madonna and, of course, Mariah, with a whopping 18 No. 1 hits to her credit.

“Rihanna’s tenth #1 single is a monumental accomplishment and a testament to her incredible artistry,” said Island Def Jam President Steve Bartels. “This was a truly collaborative and creative effort, spearheaded by Rihanna’s tireless work and aided in no small part by the incredible Britney Spears and her team. I am extremely proud of Rihanna.”

Rihanna’s Grammy-winning fifth album ‘Loud’ was released on November 12
